I’m a PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience and a licensed Psychologist and Psychotherapist in Milan.
During my PhD at the Salzburg University, I had the opportunity of deepening my knowledge in sleep, sleep problems and consequences of bad sleep across the whole life span, including consequences during pregnancy for attachment and first infant-mother relationship.
Once back in Italy I started to integrate my research knowledge into clinical practice. Since January 2016 I regularly work as psychologist and clinical research fellow at the S.C. Psichiatria II, ASST Santi Paolo e Carlo, Milano, where I’m in charge of all the neurophysiology studies of the psychiatry department, mainly investigating sleep in first episode psychosis and bipolar disorders, chronotherapy for depression and risk of depression during pregnancy as well as EMDR (attachment trauma) in eating disorders. I also work as a freelance psychotherapist in my private practice or collaborating with different private clinics in Milan.
As psychotherapist I largely work with depression, anxiety, personality disorders, emotional and relational problems. A few years ago, I also decided to learn EMDR (Eye Movements Desensitization and Reprocessing), a psychotherapeutic technique based on dysfunctional processing of emotional and traumatic memories, particularly relevant in post-traumatic stress disorder, but also extremely helpful in many other conditions. Over the years I have worked with adults, adolescents and their families.
I like considering psychotherapy as a virtual place and time were therapist and client can travel together in order to achieve relevant goals. In the first sessions, I try to understand more about that specific person and symptoms background as well as about possible conflicts and family background. I believe this is the best way to set goals together, follow client’s needs, decide what we should address and how during our sessions.
I find it extremely important to check our progresses from time to time in order to evaluate whether we are satisfied with the work we are doing, or if we need some adjustments. This is because psychotherapy is a process, continuously evolving considering clients’ needs, evolution and contingency.
My approach to the treatment of different clinical problems is guided by an integrative method, grounding its roots mainly in a psychodynamic approach and third wave of cognitive theory, including, when needed, my knowledge on trauma, attachment and sleep.
I’m also a trained psychologist for CBT-I (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia), indicated by the recent European guideline for the diagnosis and treatment of insomnia, as the first-line treatment for chronic insomnia; aware of the importance of sleep and consequences of bad sleep for psychopathology, I deliver CBT-I not only as specific treatment in cases of severe chronic insomnia, but I include some elements of this protocol into daily psychotherapy sessions when needed.
I love travelling and exploring new countries and cultures. I was born in a seaside town and therefore I’ve always considered the sea as my natural place, able to give me peace and relaxation. However, since I lived in Austria, I also realized that mountains can give me exactly the same calm feeling and I now therefore love spending time both on the sea and in the mountains. In my free time I like reading and practicing yoga.
I am an English-speaking Psychologist and Psychotherapist in Milan specialised in psychological therapies for teenagers, adults and older adults.
